Long Island Otoplasty - Facial Plastic Surgeon - Dr. James Marotta

Otoplasty or the procedure commonly known as "ear pinning" is a procedure performed to reshape the ears.  Patients who are born with ears that stick out or protrude have a condition called congenital lop ear.  This may be due to the overgrowth of ear cartilage or the loss of a fold in the ear.  One or both ears can be effected.  Otoplasty or ear reshaping is a surgery that treats this condition.  Otoplasty surgery may be performed on children 6 years of  age or older as the ear has reached full size at this age.  Ear reshaping can also be done when an ear protrudes due to trauma.

As a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who performs ear reconstruction and microtia surgery in addition to ear reshaping,  Dr. Marotta has particular expertise and training in otoplasty.

The goals of otoplasty are unique to each individual and depend on factors such as ear, facial structure and medical history.  A detailed consultation and imaging session are a necessary part of our practice to help define your goals and achieve outstanding results.

Reasons for having Otoplasty

  • Correct ear deformities present from birth
  • Bring better proportion to your ears and facial features.
  • Restore the ears after an accident or sports injury.

General Procedure

Dr. Marotta performs otoplasty under sedation or local anesthesia depending on the age and comfort of the patient.   All incisions are placed behind the ear and there are no visible scars following otoplasty.  The ears are then reshaped with suture and cartilage remodeling techniques.   Otoplasty takes about an hour.

Recovery

Post-operatively our instructions call for head of bed elevation and limited activity.  A light pressure bandage is removed the next day.  Pain, swelling and bruising is minimal following otoplasty.  A lighter ear bandage is provided and worn for the first 7 days following otoplasty.   Sutures behing the ear are removed 7 days after the procedure.   Patients generally return to school and work quite rapidly.
