Microdermabrasion is a process by which the topmost layer of skin is removed.  Typically, microdermabrasion is performed using particles or crystals, which is somewhat akin to "sand blasting" the skin.  These particles are reused and can clump leading to uneven removal of skin.  In addition, the typical microdermabrasion treatment is limited to removal of only the outermost layer of dead skin.  What if the damage is deeper?

At Marotta Facial Plastic Surgery, we go beyond microdermabrasion.  We use the DiamondTome Wand which removes dead layers of skin in a controlled fashion, layer by very thin layer (hundreds of microns).  In this manner, the treatment can be tailored to your skin.  You may require only very superficial treatment but, if needed, we have the ability to remove sun damage and skin imperfections that may lie deeper.  Removing the layer of dead skin cells and sundamaged skin leaves a smoother skin texture and promotes the growth of healthy new skin cells.  In addition, Dr. Marotta performs treatment of all conditions, like acne scrarring, scar revision, and deep wrinkle correction, that for any meaningful improvement require deeper treatment.

What can be treated with Diamondtome Skin Resurfacing?

• Sun damaged skin and age spots on the face, hands, shoulders/back, chest, and neck 
• Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
• Extraction of blackheads and whiteheads
• Hyperpigmentation reduction
• Oily skin
• Minor scar revision
• Acne scarring

General Procedure

Your face will be thoroughly cleansed of all oils.  The Diamondtome wand is then used to perform the procedure and the area to be treated is covered in a systematic fashion.  Patients feel little to no discomfort and say the wand feels like the roughness of a cat's tongue.  Your skin will look and feel smoother even after the first treatment and will continue to improve with additional treatments. 

Recovery

Recovery is minimal with the Diamondtome, despite its ability to go deeper than typical microdermabrasion machines.  Your skin may look slightly flushed after treatment but this dissipates after 10-30 minutes.   Patients can return to work immediately.  For severe acne scarring, scar revision, or deep wrinkles you may require deeper treatment by Dr. Marotta with the Diamondtome or dermabrasion.  In these cases, additional recovery time may be needed.
