Protruding veins can be treated by injection with sclerotherapy (sclero - means hard). The injection solution is simply saline in concentrated amounts with a small amount of local anesthetic. As a result of the injection unsightly dilated blood vessels collapse and sclerose (harden then dissappear).
What can Dr. Marotta treat with Sclerotherapy?
- Protruding or dilated veins around the eyes, temple, or legs
General Procedure
The solution is delivered by a very fine gauge needle. Pressure bandages are applied afterward to reduce the potential for bruising and swelling.
Recovery
The vessel usually disappears immediately, but you may have some bruising and swelling at the injection site. The swelling dissipates over 24 hours. The bruising may take up to a week to disappear but can be easily covered with make-up.
