Long Island Rhinoplasty - Facial Plastic Surgeon - Dr. James Marotta

Nose surgery (Rhinoplasty) is a procedure to reshape the nose in order to give it a more pleasing look and sometimes correct breathing problems. Septal surgery (Septoplasty) is an operation on the nasal septum (the cartilage and bone that separates the left from the right side of your nose) to straighten a deviated septum. When combined, as they frequently are, this surgery is called a Septorhinoplasty.  Septorhinoplasty is generally considered one of the most difficult operations and an area in which Dr. Marotta has particular expertise and training.

The goals of septorhinoplasty are unique to each individual and depend on factors such as nasal and facial structure, skin thickness, medical history, and underlying breathing problems.  A detailed consultation and imaging session are a necessary part of our practice to help define your goals and achieve outstanding results.

Reasons for having Nose Surgery

  • Bring better proportion to your nose and facial features.
  • Restore the nose after an accident or sports injury.
  • Help with breathing problems by rebuilding the nasal passages.
  • Correct nasal deformities present from birth.

Note: if the reason for your procedure is to correct breathing problems or a deformity, it might be covered by your insurance.

General Procedure

Dr. Marotta performs all nasal surgery under deep sedation.  Septoplasty alone takes about a ½ hour, whereas septorhinoplasty can take anywhere from two to three hours in length, depending on the particulars of your operation.

Dr. Marotta is well versed in both open and closed septorhinoplasty.  In the open technique an incision is placed in-between the nostrils on the columella (the strip of skin and cartilage between your nostrils).  In the closed technique, the incisions are all internal. The operation will be tailored to your situation and the reasons for choosing one technique over the other discussed in your consultation.

Recovery

Post-operatively our instructions call for head of bed elevation and limited activity.  If you’ve had septoplasty alone, a gauze bandage under the nose is all the dressing that is required.  A septorhinoplasty, however, requires the placement of a nasal cast for one week to aid the healing process and to minimize movement of the nose.  Additionally, you may have some nasal packing but it will be removed the very next day.  Patients generally experience very little pain with nose surgery and require only occasional prescription oral pain medicine.  Nasal swelling is the most common problem encountered in septorhinoplasty but a good portion of it resolves by the time the cast removed.  Most of the swelling disappears within one month.  Other complications, like infection, are relatively rare occurring in less than one percent of patients.  We will do all in our power to minimize potential complications and insure a smooth recovery.
